As my photo library grows, and as I increase my knowledge of digital photography and editing, I want a process that I can easily follow (and will follow), and works well for me.

As you can probably tell I am not a computer tech savvy person. Could I edit photos and videos from the network hard drive painlessly, or would I need to move any photos or video to my computer so that I get better processing speeds? Does Lightroom work with network type hard drives? I do like it that these external systems do offer a mirroring of hard drives, so that if one drive fails, it can be replaced and restored and we don't lose everything. My concerns with the network option is how this would work when I am editing photos or video.

But was also looking at a network solution such as the Drobo 5N or QNap TS-451 so that my husband could also store information and access it all in one location (he has a pc, who's only digital media is what he takes on his iPhone). I was recently looking at the Drobo 5D, since I was told that it would preform best with Lightroom and editing programs. I have been backing up to a 2tb removable hard drive, but find that it is time to move my images off of my computer and utilize a better storage/accessing system. Thus, my computer (MacBook Pro 15' 1TB hard drive) is nearly maxed. I have been progressively increasing the types and numbers of photos and videos that I have taken over the years and have been learning more and more about editing and processing of files. I am struggling to figure out what the best solution is for storing and accessing my digital raw/jpeg files that have been accumulating on my hard drive over the years.
